Shri Sanyal Mahasaya was born on January 20th, 1877 in a hamlet called Sadhan Para, in the district of Nadia on the eastern coast of India. Nadia is considered one of the holiest places in India, because many spiritual personalities were born in this area.
His Guru, Shri Lahiri Mahasaya, initiated him into Kriya Yoga in 1893, although he had already been initiated in a dream.
He was then only sixteen year old.
Shri Sanyal Mahasaya worked as a schoolteacher and together with the future Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore, he founded and taught at the Institute at Shanthiniketan. Later on, this Institute became a famous university. He worked there for seven years and as a result of his skill, exemplary character and insight, he became Tagore's trusted associate and close friend.
Shri Sanyal Mahasaya was a gifted writer, a divine guide and Guru, an educator and a true lover of mankind. He spread the secret science of Kriya Yoga to countless householders, brahmacharis and monks throughout India.
